Still Waters » Dive Deep » The River and the Highway

While I'm trying to keep this site balanced between Xellos and Valgaav - my two favorite pairing options for Filia - and trying to avoid anything that focuses too much on one or the other, I couldn't not include this song. It's one of those lyrical blends of words that describe characters so perfectly, it can't be ignored.

The River and the Highway
by Pam Tillis

She follows the path of least resistance;
She doesn't care to see the mountaintop.
She twists and turns with no regard to distance,
She never comes to a stop.

While Filia does have a backbone and when pressed to face something she truly believes in, she's a formidable force, she does generally follow the path of least resistance. But water can wear down even mountains too. She does what she has to do, and she keeps on going.

And she rolls, she's a river.
Where she goes, time will tell.
Heaven knows, he can't go with her,
And she rolls all by herself.
All by herself.

He's headed for a single destination.
He doesn't care what's standing in his path.
He's a line between two points of separation,
He ends just where it says to on the map.

When was the last time Xellos cared about what lay between him and the goal of his orders? He doesn't care what's standing in his path. And when was the last time he moved beyond the boundaries of what he's been told to do? He ends just where he should.

And he rolls, he's a highway.
Where he goes, time will tell.
Heaven knows, she can't go with him,
And he rolls all by himself.
All by himself.

And their lives do not necessarily mesh well. She's one kind of person, and he's another. Their goals and their paths lie in different directions. He can't go with her, and she follow him. But...

And every now and then, he offers her a shoulder,
And every now and then, she overflows,
And every now and then, a bridge crosses over-
It's a moment that every lover knows.

...that isn't to say there aren't moments when they still encounter each other. Their lives may not lie along the same path, but they certainly can overlap and cross.

And she rolls,
       (And he rolls)
She's a river.
       (He's a highway)
Where she goes,
       (Where he goes)
Time will tell.
       (Time will tell)
Heaven knows, she can't go with him,
       (He can't go with her)
And she rolls all by herself.
And he rolls all by himself.
Fare thee well.

And sometimes, that's what love really is in the end. It's not always happily ever afters. It's not always a fairy tale with roses and rainbows. You don't always get what you want in life. Camelots and perfect lives are lovely, lovely things, but they're a fantasy. Happiness rarely lands gift-wrapped on your doorstep; you oftentimes have to be willing to sacrifice for it. You have to build it together yourself. "Marriages aren't made in heaven. They come in kits, with assembly required." This holds true here too, with them. Make no mistake, if Xellos and Filia were to want to be together, they would find a way, even if all they could realistically have was just knowing the other was out there somewhere, and they would be there when it mattered. Xellos would have to find a way to work her in without compromising his duties and loyalties to Zellas, and Filia would have to be willing to live a life without actual romantic love. Sometimes life isn't what we wanted. Sometimes we have to be pragmatic about what we want, and what we can realistically have.
