Still Waters » Dive Deep » For Herself
This song is more situational than generic, so the exact specifics do not apply. The overall mood and theme to the song does fit though.
For Herself
by Reba McEntire
Uncle Slim had let her know she couldn't ride that horse.
He was the one that was only meant for men.
She waited around till way after dark,
Rode that horse with all her heart.
And in the night, how she rode.
What that verse is about is being told she cannot do something for whatever the reason: not old enough, strong enough, talented enough...and going ahead and proving that she can do it anyway. It's not so much about proving it to others as it is about proving it to herself that she can.
Somehow she always knew she had the strength inside,
And even if she fell, she'd survive.
In spite of all the tears she may cry,
This is how she has to live her life.
As hard as it may be, she has to find out for herself.
We see this side of Filia at the end of TRY episode 8, when she leaves with Lina and the others to find out the truth for herself. She already knows that if what Valgaav claimed is the reality, it's not going to be easy to face. But she can't live not knowing, and she doesn't want to live a lie. "This is how she has to live her life / as hard as it may be..."
Mama and daddy told her from the start he was no good.
They'd seen how he treated the other girls.
She waited around till the sun went down,
Slipped out of the house not makin' a sound.
And in the night, oh, how they drove.
She's received so many dire warnings about this or that, but in the end, she chooses to reject those warnings to find out for herself what's true, and what's not.
Somehow she always knew she had the strength inside,
And even if she fell, she'd survive.
In spite of all the tears she may cry,
This is how she has to live her life.
As hard as it may be, she has to find out for herself.
It was fifteen years to the day
He became a stranger in her eyes.
In the coldest words of anger
He said, "without me, you won't survive."
I personally see Saichuro in this scene. Filia was so dependant on the temple - she had no life, no experience beyond those walls, and her actions in TRY episode 7 showed fear of the Elders.
There's a suitcase in the closet she had packed six months ago.
She don't leave a note, that's not her style.
So she waited around till way after dark,
Left that man who broke her heart.
Now she's gone, oh, she's gone.
But during the course of the season, Filia grows up, and finds that backbone we first glimpsed in Episode 7. She's never known life beyond the temple walls, but that doesn't stop her from leaving them for good.
Somehow she always knew she had the strength inside,
And even if she fell, she'd survive.
In spite of all the tears she may cry,
This is how she has to live her life.
As hard as it may be, she has to find out for herself.
As this verse clearly states.
