Fanfiction Fanart Essays

Fanfiction

I prefer stories which focus primarily on Filia above all other characters. While they can feature pairings, these are usually not written for that purpose. A story written entirely from Filia's point of view is the kind of story I'm looking for. While they can be multi-chaptered, most of these are usually one-shot 'fics. It's possible I may change this later to allow more pairing-centric 'fics, but there's a lot of archives that take those. I'm looking to keep the content and themes as unique as possible.

I will take pairing 'fics - lemon or not - that do put Filia in a D/s type of interaction. The D/s theme does not have to be explicit or clearly stated, but showing signs of a Dominant/submissive interaction. There's several fanfics in the archive that can serve as examples. If you're not certain, then by all means, please send the 'fic my way and I'll see if it fits in. If it doesn't quite match up with what I want, there's still a shot for it under the "recommended reading list" if I like it.

Currently, those 'fics under recommended reading go to a private, closed archive I maintain which is basically just a collection of various genres of fanfiction I've liked and saved, and placed out for others to view. But if I like your fanfic enough to place it under recommended reading, I'll ask you if there's a URL you'd like me to link to. (If you submit your 'fic to me via URL, I'll use that if I don't archive it but link to it instead, unless you say otherwise.)

Fanfiction submission guidelines:
  1. Your fanfic must be in one of the following formats: .rtf (rich text document), .txt (plain text) or .htm/.html. I do not accept .doc files. Too many of those were created in Microsoft Word, which I consider a POS program, and don't have contaminating my computer. One reason I consider it a POS is that most of the files it creates are not very compatible with other Microsoft-produced word processing programs. If you need instructions on how to convert your story to from .doc to .rtf, see these sites: http://www.itsecurity.com/dictionary/rtf.htm and www.siskiyous.edu/tlc/Surveys/rtfinstructions.htm. It's not always a flawless conversion - there's sometimes some glitches, so be sure to cross-check to make sure all the line breaks are where you want them to be and the text formatting is close to what you wanted before sending it off.

  2. You can submit your fanfiction in email either through attachment, or by providing me with a link to a URL. If you attach it, due to the way HTML-coding in e-mails works now, please place the fanfiction in a zip file before attaching it. This will prevent the email systems from trying to place it into the body of an e-mail. When it does that, quite often it screws stuff up and makes it even more a headache to deal with. You can get a good zip program here: http://www.winzip.com/.

  3. If your story is multi-chaptered, please paste short excerpts of your choosing into an e-mail and send it to me. If it looks like it might fit, I'll request to see the full story. If it's already up on the web, still send me excerpts in an e-mail, but go ahead and provide a link as well when you do. I don't have a lot of free time to read through fanfiction the way I used to anymore, so that will help me reach a decision faster.

  4. This is very important. If you e-mail me out of the blue and attach a file, it will get deleted. I'm not going to risk compromising my computer to viruses, worms, and trojans. Contact me beforehand with a brief synopsis of what you'd like to send, and then send that attachment from the same address after you hear back from me. For fastest results, state in the subject line: "Still Waters fanfic submission: (Fic title here)" and include your name, website (if applicable) and things like that in the body of the text.

I won't accept stories that are pieces of crap. What qualifies as "crap" are stories with netspeak, author's notes in mid-story, complete disregard for spelling, punctuation, and/or formatting, and hate/bash 'fics. This goes double if the writer defends any/all of the above as being "personal style" or "it's just fanfiction so who cares about quality" or uses a young age as an excuse to get away with any of the above.

I honestly don't mind mistakes -- everybody makes those. I also don't mind low quality in writing if the writer is interested in honing their craft and increasing their skill and talent. But if you're inclined to take any kind of critique and label it as a "flame", please refrain from wasting both your time and mine.

If a story content piques my interest and I'd like to archive it, consider yourself gaining an instant beta reader for that particular fanfic. I'll correct technical errors automatically. (e.g., misplaced punctuation - there's a difference between style and flat-out erroneous usage in fictional works; misused words - such as using "your" when the proper word would be "you're" or even "yore"; and overlooked spelling "mistakes" - ever and every are two bad ones of mine; it's usually quite clear which one was meant to be used. Somebody doesn't say "I don't every want to go back again" after all. They're both legitimate words, so spellcheckers don't get them.) If I see something that's not a technical error or I'm not absolutely certain it is, I'll write back and inquire about and offer possible options. Missing words, awkward sentences, unclear speaker identity, that sort of thing.

I will accept nearly any genre, of any rating. Well, I naturally cannot accept m/m slash, since the 'fic must be Filia-centric, and...well... that's self-explanatory. I like f/f slash as much as I like het, but for the life of me, I cannot see Filia in a f/f slash situation. If you can produce a f/f slash 'fic that can actually get me to see it happening believably and in character, I'll love you. But I've tried it. I've tried putting her through a bunch of possibilities in RP, and I've wanted it to work, but I've not been able to find a way to make myself actually be able to accept her actions as in character. (Non-con's a different story.)

Whether or not I accept a rapefic as non-con, or reject it as a glamorization of rape depends on the gut reaction I get from the 'fic. I like certain types of non-con, but it depends on how the subject is handled. I don't mind if it's graphic content. I may wind up putting graphic sex content on a different site with javascript hoops to jump through in order to reduce the ease of access. I'll accept dark, angst, comedy, drama, introspective, fluff - just so long as it's Filia-centric, well-written, and a good read that fits in on the site.

Fanart

I'm having hard of a time determining how to explain what qualifies for archival here. Single drawings of Filia, scene fanart, couple pictures - there's a lot more room for possibilities here since visual medium conveys things differently than written fanworks. You know what they say, "a picture is worth a thousand words".

I think I may keep it to invitation only. I do welcome link submissions inviting me to come look over someone's gallery, though. If you have more than one Filia-centric picture, just send me a general link to where your Slayers or Filia fanart is, and I'll be happy to drop by. I love looking at fanart anyway. If I see something that catches my attention, I'll let you know. It may take me a bit to consider it; the pictures featured now are ones which I've had plenty of time to mull over and look at and decide not only did I like them, but they were what I wanted to show.

Essays

Saying 'essays' is probably something of a misnomer on my part. I'm not looking for a carefully constructed thesis written well within the MLA Style Guide rules, complete with a bibliography and footnotes.

Of course, if you want to submit something like that, I'll no doubt be starry-eyed in delight.

I'm not going to be picky. It can be a 20 page thesis paper, or a short rant, an editorial, or anything in between. If it's thought-provoking, coherent, and well-written, bring it on.

I'm looking primarily for essays which delve into Filia's psyche, and her interaction with other characters, either romantically or not. But I'm also interested in essays that discuss pre-industrial living, dark religion, and BDSM, particularly the D/s aspect.

I'm especially interested in any essays written about Filia focusing on the D/s slant from the point of view of a Dominant, or even a Switch. I know there's got to be a few out there who are fans of Slayers TRY.

My only requirement is that if you're presenting something as factual, please provide a bibliography of sorts with a clearly formatted citation of sources. (You can get an automatically formatted citation for free at http://www.landmark-project.com/citation_machine/index.php. Don't worry about hanging indents though.)

Please refer to the Fanfiction submission guidelines for document type and submission procedure.
